Important nutrients for thyroid health

What are the most important nutrients for thyroid health?  Did you know that the food you eat can play a significant role in supporting your thyroid health? Your thyroid requires several key nutrients to function properly, and making sure you’re getting enough of these nutrients is essential for optimal thyroid health. Here are some of the most important nutrients to focus on:

1.  Iodine: Iodine is a critical nutrient for thyroid function, as it’s required to produce thyroid hormones. According to the Harvard School of Public Health (2021), “Without enough iodine, the thyroid cannot make enough thyroid hormone, which can lead to hypothyroidism.” Good sources of iodine include seaweed, iodized salt, dairy products, and seafood.

2. Selenium: Selenium is another important nutrient for thyroid health, as it’s required to convert T4 to T3 (the active form of thyroid hormone). According to the Harvard School of Public Health (2021), “Selenium also helps to protect the thyroid gland from damage.” Good sources of selenium include Brazil nuts, fish, poultry, and eggs.

3. Zinc: Zinc is essential for the conversion of T4 to T3, as well as for the production of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). According to the Harvard School of Public Health (2021), “Zinc deficiency has been linked to hypothyroidism.” Good sources of zinc include oysters, beef, chicken, pumpkin seeds, and cashews.

4. Vitamin D: Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to autoimmune thyroid diseases such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. According to the Harvard School of Public Health (2021), “Vitamin D helps to regulate immune function and can help reduce inflammation in the body.” Good sources of vitamin D include sunlight, fatty fish, and fortified foods like milk and cereal.

5. B vitamins: B vitamins are important for thyroid hormone synthesis and can help reduce stress, which can negatively impact thyroid function. According to the Harvard School of Public Health (2021), “Low levels of B vitamins have been associated with hypothyroidism.” Good sources of B vitamins include whole grains, leafy greens, and nuts.

By making sure you’re getting enough of these important nutrients, you can support your thyroid health and reduce your risk of thyroid issues. So load up on those iodine-rich seaweeds and Brazil nuts, and soak up some sunshine to keep those thyroid hormones in balance!
