Can acupuncture help with Premature Ejaculation?
Is there a premature ejaculation treatment that is non-invasive, painless and aims to actually help build your overall energy and stamina?
As TCM practitioners, erectile difficulties and premature ejaculation can in fact result from a variety of different causes. To crudely break down the process of ejaculation, allow me to put things into a Yin and Yang perspective.
Imagine your Yin energy as the cool, somewhat feminine energy which cools the body, adds structure and form to your muscles and skeleton, and allows us to slow down and reflect – a kind of brake pedal if you like.
Imagine our Yang energy as the fire-like, masculine energy which gives us our warmth, vigour, stamina and allows us to get up and go – this is the accelerator.
In its crudest sense, premature ejaculation is a breakdown between the accelerator and the brake – that is, most often there is some aspect of your Yin energy that is not allowing the brake to restrain the accelerator.
This is a fairly crude explanation, but one that might just help to put things into a context and to help take some worry out of the equation.
In most cases of ‘Yin deficiency’ there will be some other associated signs and symptoms – perhaps warm hands and feet at night, busy or racing mind, feeling of heat in the afternoon, mild sweating in the evening or sore and stiff lower back. By looking at your current set of signs and symptoms, we continuously apply and change the way we treat you using acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.
In TCM terms, things that can cause this sort of imbalance between Yin Yang are:
- Imbalances between work and rest
- Poor lifestyle choices
- Sleep issues and poor sleep quality
- Overexertion using weights or recreational drugs.
So you can see from this list, it’s not just all about your penis!
As TCM practitioners, we are less concerned with your Western Diagnosis, and more concerned with the array of signs and symptoms each person brings to the table. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine aims at helping to rebalance your energy in a way that makes you as a whole, feel much better.
A word on the Research :
Perhaps because of the intimate nature of this issue, there are few large scale randomised controlled trials for PE using acupuncture and/or Chinese medicine, so the scientific community would say that there is unclear evidence. There is however some promising results from a 2015 Systematic Review for the use of real acupuncture over false, or sham acupuncture, as well as for the use of Chinese Medicine when compared to ‘usual care’ (1).
Of course, we need more research to fully clarify acupuncture and Chinese Medicine’s role in Men’s Health issues, and to explore issues such as frequency of treatment, how soon positive effects end after cessation of treatment etc. Results from the systematic review listed here and this smaller Randomised Control Trial (RCT) from Turkey give us the inspiration to keep up the research!
